Project License Alternative

Hi guys.

I need to know if it's possible to have a generic resource with Project
Manager Permissions, so that several Project Leaders can use one MS Project
Professional License.

Do you have a similar alternative?

I'll be interested to see who else responds to your question. My
understanding is that Microsoft requires named user licensing, so your
scenario would violate that

Generic Resources, by definition, cannot log in.

As for your licensing question, you would need to speak to a licensing
specialist. Please also review the relevant Microsoft page, located at

Microsoft Project 2007 is licensed on a "per device" model, meaning
that device that has a copy installed on it must be licensed.

Remote users who are accessing a terminal service or remote desktop
session (client or server) must have their own license (unless they are
acting in a support capacity), regardless of whether they use the
software on their local machine or on a remote one. Microsoft is
adamant that remote access or multiplexing does not reduce the number
of required licenses.

I believe that multiple users physically sharing the same device, so
long as they are non-concurrent, may share a license.

Project Server 2007's licensing allows up to two users to connect
CAL-free, so long as they are only administering the server. Project
Professional 2007 includes one Project Server 2007 CAL -- I do not know
for sure whether it is a User or Device CAL, but I believe it's a
device CAL because of the way that Project Professional 2007 is
licensed.

Project Server 2007 Device CALs allow one device, used by any user, to
access Project Server. Project Server 2007 User CALs allow one user,
using any device, to access Project Server.

In your case, I believe that you would be okay having all the users
physically access one machine with a valid Project Professional 2007
license, so long as they are non-concurrent. I believe that concurrent
users would be considered "multiplexing" and therefore fall under those
requirements. Furthermore, remote users would require their own
license, concurrent or not.

However, please take the time to call a license vendor and ask them
before you do anything so you're in compliance. It shouldn't take long.

Hi Paul.

Could you tell me more about it? This option could be very helpful for me.
Thanks.
