Project opens Import Mapping box instead of mpp file

I'm running Microsoft Project 2000 (SR-1). I've had several users send me
..mpp and .mpd files that they can open. The problem is that any time I use
"File | Open" or double-click on a .mpp or .mpd file, Project opens the
Import Mapping box. If I send the files back to the originators they can
open them fine.

Any ideas?
