Project Pro 2003 Crash

D

Dean Beckley

When attempting to open a specific project in Project Pro 2003 SP2 that is
published to Project Server 2003 SP2 the follow error message is displayed:

"Microsoft Project has encountered a problem an dneeds to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience."

The Application event log shows:

Event Type: Information
Event Source: Microsoft Office 11
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1001
Date: 11/19/2007
Time: 2:52:27 PM
User: N/A
Computer: APP01
Description:
Bucket 240143878, bucket table 1, faulting application winproj.exe, version
11.2.2005.1801, stamp 42ee6fe4, faulting module winproj.exe, version
11.2.2005.1801, stamp 42ee6fe4, debug? 0, fault address 0x0000dafd.

This error is only happening with one project; all other projects published
to Project Server appear to be functioning normally. I reviewed KB832395 and
it does not apply. Can anyone help me troubleshoot what is wrong with this
one project?

Thanks,
Dean

Dean:

This indicates corruption in the specific plan. You can try setting your Pro
client to Manual calculation and see if this helps you open the plan. If
not, you must recover it from a backup. Let us know how you get along and
perhaps we can give you more recovery advice.

Gary,

Thanks for responding. I agree it's a single plan corruption issue. One
new bit of information since I posted. On a whim, I asked another user to
try to open the project and it was opened without error. Then the project
manager and myself were both able to open it without error. Does this give
you any better clue as to what is corrupt and how to fix it?

Thanks,
Dean

Odd, very odd. Actually, this tidbit adds more confusion. After thanking
whatever deity you pray to, I suggest that you do some preventive therapy.
Go to our projectserverexperts site, and in the FAQ section, see the "Force
rebuild of the binary record" topic and follow the instructions. Put that
under the "couldn't hurt" category.

I have never posted here, but have a google alerts I set up last year
when this issue was causing my project manager to nearly lose her
mind.
I do not know if this is the "same" issue, however we found,
interestingly, that if she used her laptop and its installed MS
Project - this error would happen after some time. At that point,
recovery of a backup up copy was the only way to continue. Can I say
she saved her project more often than anyone I have ever known
before!
Anyhow, the point of this reply, is that when she would take her
laptop back to its docking station, the problem would go away. From
the time we learned this, she would take her docking station with her
to our meeting rooms. Problem "solved".
So why would this make a difference? You got me. All I can tell you
is that an undocked laptop, connected (wired) to a LAN at work behaved
differently that the same laptop connected (wired) to a LAN via its
docking station. We were using HP Compac laptops during this trying
time.
