Project Pro 2003 - Linking to Project Server & Data File Locations

Karl Burrows

Okay, spent a good part of this evening setting up Project Server 2003 for a
single server setup on SBS 2003. Just did the basic install and things went
fine. I read all the MS install guides and purchased "Administering an
Enterprise EMO" to make sure I had all the setup correct.

Anyway, it is all setup and there is no information in any of these guides
on how to configure the client to access the server, where data files are
stored, offline access (if that is possible) and how to migrate current
Project 2000 files.

Can anyone offer some assistance? I have read about 500 pages today and
there is nothing on client setup, which would be helpful! Thanks!

Karl:

To configure Project to connect to Project Server, go to Tools > Enterprise
Options > Project Server Accounts

Complete the necessary connection information in the dialog and select
control connection state manually

Once you've done this, exit and restart Project which will now prompt you to
connect to your server. By the way, Managing Enterprise Projects, our other
book, covers operations from the client side. To answer your other
questions:

Projects are stored in the SQL Server database
To import your Project 2000 files to the Server you use Tools > Enterprise
Options > Import Project to Enterprise

I guess the main issue is my MS volume license reseller told me the 10
licenses we purchased with the server were for Project Pro installation. I
found out today after hours on the phone with MS, that we just purchased
access licenses (like Server) and that the desktop application is not
included, so I have to drop back and punt to decide if Web access is going
to work for our users vs. having the desktop application. I can get one Pro
version for the data manager for it to work, but it is not really what is
represented on the MS site. Very different from what we were told from MS
when I called support before we purchased to make sure it had what we
wanted.

Any suggestions on how to "sell" using Web access to our group?

Karl:

Project Web Access does not replace the Project client. In fact, it's quite
useless without Project. You can't even configure Project Server without the
Project client. Anyone who will manage plans in your environment must have a
copy of Project.

Right, I know at least one user had to have Access Pro client to create the
reports and manage. I was just mislead by our vendor and have to figure out
how to back track.

Thanks for the help!!
