Project Pro closes when opening a project stored on Project Server

Has anyone met the following situation:
We have a project stored on Project Server. It was working fine, until one
day it started to do the following:
When opening the project from Project Professional client, the Project Pro
client closes without any notification (and without any trace in the event
log). But the project remains checked-out to the person who tried to open it
(this can be seen on PWA)

Is there any possibility to repair this project?

You'll need to check in the project. You don't mention which version you are
using, but the check in options are available via an administrator in the
server or administration pages.

Project 2003 (Server and client)
The symptom remains even after project chek-in (on PWA).
