Project Pro Connection to Server - Single Workstation Issue

J

Please do not blast me for the cross post. I posted this in another
group and an MVP recommended that I post here.

Problem:
One of my workstations with XP Pro SP2 + Project Pro 2003 will not
connect to my Project 2003 Server - not all workstations just this one.

I am using Windows Authentication, the user works from a different
workstation. All components are installed into a domain / all accounts

are domain accounts. The error I get on this workstation is "Project
was unable to establish a connection with the selected Project Server.
This could be caused by a loss of network connectivity, invalid user
name or password, lack of an enterprise global template or problems
with the Project Server or database, or your project Server may not
have the enterprise features enabled." The workstation that is causing

grief is a production workstation and cannot be formatted or rebuilt
without causing significant problems to my environment.

-I think the server must be okay, because I can connect from both the
PWA and from Project Pro 2003 on another workstation.
-I have changed my regional settings to match the server English
(Canada), then to all match (English US) - no luck.
-if I change the project server account on the client from windows to
sql authentication (still no connection) but interestingly enough if I
change the password to something incorrect, I get a different error
(Incorrect username / password combination (5005)).
-EditSite gives me successful results, no errors.
-Yes, I followed the installation instructions.
-I installed MDAC2.7
-when I run a SQL Trace on the project database, I do get some action
when the client is attempting to login; the result is pasted below.
"exec sp_execute 1,
'192.168.169.62

',
'-

', 'Mar 7 2006 5:34:46:000PM', '192.168.169.14
', 0, 893, 2156, 401, 0,
'POST

',
'/projectserver/logon/PDSRequest.asp

',
'-

'

I am assuming something I have on this one particular client is
preventing the connection. I think I must have read every possible
news group thread about this topic, there are lots! I have not had any

success with any of the changes.

Is there a tool that can be installed on the client machine to test the

connection to the server.

What is Project Pro actually connecting to? Is it a connection to the
web http://xx/projectserver and not actually a connection to the SQL
database?

Any help will be great! Regards,

Jamie

Jamie:

Do you have other XP SP2 machines that *can* connect? The firewall settings
implemented with SP2 can cause this. Also, you should have MDAC 2.8, not
2.7. Ultimately, the Project Client connects to SQL after being
authenticated through the Project Server. So anything that blocks access to
data on the client can be the cause. Look for browser add-ons and other
unauthorized user-installed software that isn't on your other production
machines.

Another reason for this problem which I have encounter before is due to
the proxy setting. Check your IE Connection -> LAN Setting to make sure
to Bypass proxy server for local addresses or add the ProjectServer
server to the bypass list.

Thanks Gary,

Updated to MDAC 2.8 SP1. Still no luck.

Not using any browser add-ons. I do not even know where to start with
software that is installed.

you.

Sorry Gary,

I thought I had answered all of the questions - I missed the first one.

Yes, the other client that can connect is XP SP2 as well. Both of
these machines use Norton Internet Security 2006 with windows firewall
disabled (using NIS firewall). I have tried to disable NIS and attempt
the connection, still no luck. The major difference with the two PCs
(as for as project is concerned) is that the functional PC runs with
Project Pro 2003 right off the CD, no updates. I uninstalled my
Project Pro 2003, reinstalled and attempted to connect, with no luck.

Where I stand right now is: Project Pro 2003 - with all updates (office
SP1), MDAC 2.8, NIS 2006: Still no connection.

I am worried about having to support this application on an office full
of machines. I am thinking of installing Project Pro 2003 on the
server and adding a remote desktop session to allow the users to have
access to that.
