Project Pro won't connect to Project Server first time

J

John Bridgman

Here's a funny one...

We are running two Project Server boxes -- one a "development" server and
the other being set up as a "production" server. When connecting to either
box from MS Project the first attempt usually ends up with the "connect"
dialog staying up forever (an hour is the longest I have left it). If I hit
cancel, go back to the account chooser and connect again it usually connects
on the second attempt. If not, the third or fourth atttempt always works.

There are no error messages and the "Test Connection" in the account
properties dialog always succeeds. Any ideas ?

Thanks,
JB

John,

Having the exact same problem. Seems to have started when I installed
SP1 for Project Server 2003. What version are you using? Have you
had this problem ever since you installed?

I applied sp1 in our test environment. I am not unable to connect via
Project 2003 client to our server. Error message "unable to connect....loss
of connection"

Any suggestions?

If you're having a problem with PWA insure that the website & associated
application pool is running. Try an IIRESET (from a command prompt) to
shake IIS awake.

If you're having a problem with Project Pro, use the "Test Connection"
within Project Server Accounts > Properties function "ping" the server. If
that's NOT successful, then insure that the services hosted on the Project
Server box are running.

Thanks for your quick response however, I am only having a problem with
Project 2003 client professional. PWA works fine.
I did try IISReset and also ensured that all services were started and
running.

I still have the problem and am not sure what i am overlooking.

Tom,

Not an answer, I'm afraid, but more fuel to the fire.
I've seen this on 2 sites now. One was back in December and we had no idea
what was causing it. The other was today where we rebuilt a site and now
have this problem (but it's just one among a few other security issues). If
I find an answer I'll let you know. I'll check out the McAfee angle.

Just a reminder: if you apply sp1 to the server be sure that you apply it
also to the client Project 2003 Professional. Versions must be identical.
