Project Pro won't connect to Project Server first time

I noticed this issue was posted in Nov of 2004, but have not found a
resolution.

We have two different instances and we use the "manually control
connection state" to log-on to the server. It will not connect on the
first attempt. The user must cancel and then hit connect. It will
then connect w/o any issues.

We are running SP1 on the client and Server and use McAfee VirusScan
8.0.

Has anyone found anything to fix this?
