Project Professional unable to connect to Project Server using VPN

We have Project Server setup and working great locally but we are having
problems with VPN clients and Windows authentication. I understand that
Project Professional is connecting directly to the database after it
authenticates.

Domain Users connecting to our LAN with VPN get the following error..
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Project Server database is unavailable.
You can't access the database for one of the following reasons:
There is a problem with the enterprise global template in the database.
You do not have sufficient permission to access the enterprise global
template.
Network problems are preventing access.
Project Server does not have enterprise features enabled.

Try to connect to the Project Server again. If the problem persists,
contact your server administrator
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I can get it to work by creating a Project Server account. Windows
authentication does not work though.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Stephen

Hi Stephen,

It sounds like a VPN configuration problem as your client cannot access
the AD database for authentication.

Is this problem for all remote users or just one?
Can any of your VPN clients access other resources on the network?
Are you using Connection Manager? Maybe the profile needs tweaking?

Just thinking out loud...

We were using Windows 2000 server/ISA 2000 for VPN and I have since done a
fresh install of Server 2003/ISA 2004 and get the same results.

I created an allow all rule for VPN users to the LAN. One user who
initially connected while on the LAN with his laptop can connect with VPN and
everything works fine using Windows authentication.

There are two people connecting from the East coast to Hawaii with VPN who
can not connect properly without using Project authentication.

Any more ideas?

It sounds like your one user is being logged in using cached credentials
since his laptop was originally logged in to the LAN.

Are your two other users logging into the domain via the VPN connection?
