Project Server 2002

One department in our organization has been using Project Server 2002 for
some time. We now have several other areas of the company that would like
to use it. Is there a way to separate multiple departments/temas in Project
Server? For example we do not want one department seeing anothers projects
(unless of course the project involves both dept's).

Any insight is greatly appreciated.

Jeff:

There are two distinct approaches to this. One is to configure your security
in Project Server to support this using groups and categories. Often this
requires additional manual work to manage day-to-day, or a little
customization to automate, but this allows you to keep your data in one
single repository. The second approach is to provision another instance for
each group on the same server allowing each group to have their own
configuration options and separate database. You have to decide which is
more appropriate for your needs.

As a rule of thumb: If your resources are shared among any groups, they
generally should be part of the same instance. Where resources are unique
and not shared, separate instances may be easier to manage. The user
interface is capable of showing data from one instance only. Keep in mind
that while it's easier to report from one database, it's not that much more
difficult to report across multiple databases if you're willing to write
your own reports.
