Project Server 2003 and SharePoint Portal 2003 on the same Server

We currently have a Server for SharePoint Portal 2003 and another one for
Project 2003. We are building a new server that will host both SharePoint
Portal 2003 SP2 and Project 2003 SP1 and will use another SQL Server to store
the Databases (run SQL and Analysis Services - with Service Pack 4).

We are going to install SharePoint Portal first, then will restore the
SharePoint information onto this new Server (using SPS Backup/Restore); we
have done this before, we think we are fine up to this point. Next, will
install Project 2003 on the new Server and while installing it, will tell
Project installation to use the SharePoint config databases. Will then
attempt to restore the data from the old Project Server to the new one. I am
thinking that Project will have its own Portal in SharePoint Portal. Whats
the best suggestion for restoring the databases and the Project's SharePoint
sites attached to each of them?
I have been reading the Project Server 2003 Disaster Recovery guide. I just
want to hear your thoughts. Thanks!!

This is great, thanks!

I just have one more question to ask. We are still having some concerns
about having Project and SharePoint running on the same Server from the DR
standpoint and would like to have some input from the administrators and
user's experience.
I also posted a question like this one on the SharePoint Portal discussions;
I would like to hear from both sides: SharePoint and Project administrators.

Thanks!

ABG:

Let's be real clear with our terminology. SPS does not equal WSS. Both
Project Server and Portal Server require WSS. They must be installed on
separate virtual servers, however. I strong recommend against installing
Project Server and Portal Server on the same machine. I'm not groking "from
the DR standpoint."

Gary,

You are right. I should have said SharePoint Portal (SPS). I do understand
that SPS does not equal WSS and that both Project Server and Portal Server
require WSS.
Do you mind sharing the reasons why you are against installing them on the
same server?

Thanks!

1) Microsoft doesn't recommend it
2) Portal Server takes command of IIS in ways that can interfere with
Project Server, particularly when you customize
3) They're both mighty resource hungry applications and deserve their own
environments

If you've got a big box, then run virtual server for one or the other.

Gary,

Those are very valuable points. Thanks!
We do have one big box and are thinking on having one virtual server for
Project and one or more for the SharePoint Portals.
Each Virtual Server (web site on IIS) will have its own Application Pool.

Thanks!

I'm talking about Virtual Server as in VMWare or the product that Microsoft
offers called Virtual Server (formerly Connectix)

I am currently trying to decvide the same thing - one server or multiple.
Can you please clarify "big box"? I am going to deploy something on a IBMx
345 (p4 3.06Ghz, 3GB ram, 130GB free RAID5). The box is also dual CPU
capable. My thought is to put both SPS and Project on the same box and SQL
somewhere else.
