Project Server 2003 and SharePoint Problem. Urgent!

Dan Zruna

I'm having trouble getting the SharePoint features to work with Project Server 2003. When I log into Project Web Access the following message displays in the home page under Risks and Issues

"There is a problem establishing a connection with the Web server running Windows SharePoint Services. Contact your system administrator.

When I try to link a document to a task I receive the following message

"The documents, risks and issues features in Project Web Access use Windows SharePoint Services
A Windows SharePoint Services site needs to be created for your project before you can share project documents or track project risks and issues. Site creation takes a few minutes, so if the project was just published, wait a few minutes and then visit the page again. Otherwise, contact your server administrator.

I'm running the following configuration
Windows 2003 Server (DC) running Project Server 2003 and SharePoint Services 2.
Windows 2003 Server (DC) running SQL Server 2000 and Analysis Server

I have reinstalled my server three times now and follow the installation instructions exactly. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. I evaluated Project Server a few years ago and ended up not going with it because of configuration problems and things that just didn't work. Is the new 2003 version any better

Hi Dan,

If you go to Admin --> Windows Sharepoint Services --> Connect to Sharepoint
Server, is the information filled in correctly? And if you click "Save
Changes", does it come up with a error, and what is the error?

Have you run the wsswiz.exe wizard to customize the WSS Templates for
Project server?

Hi Nico,

I do not receive any error when I click save and I can't locate a file called wisswiz.exe on my project server.

Insert the Project CD and select Sharepoint from the Autorun page that opens. There is the Sharepoint Wizard

I ran the wizard again successfully and I still can't connect to SharePoint. I think the problem is that the SharePoint sites are not being created automatically when a new project is entered even though Project Server has been configured to do so. Any other suggestions?

I too am having the same problem and look forward to
getting it resolved.

RTFM

Goto the microsoft website, download sharepoint. Install sharepoint.
RTFM before trying to configure sharepoint, then run WSS from the
project CD.
Then install MS PROJECT.

Order of installation
1) Windows 2003 w/ IIS
2) MSQL
3) Sharepoint
4) MS Project.

Also read every single word when installing this are you will have to
start over like I did.

Maybe check your SharePoint installation? Are you using Windows SharePoint
Services 2.0 (WSS) or Portal Server? There seem to be issues installing
both. See MS Knowledge Base Article 820744.

I'm using SharePoint Services 2.0. SharePoint seems to operate fine. It seems as though the identity that is being using by Project Server is not valid.

I am also having a similar problem. I am running Project Server 2003 and Sharepoint services on a Windows 2003 Server. I can publish and view projects but when I try to create the site for the MS_ProjectServer_PublicDocuments under Admin I get an error stating that the path C:\windows\systems32\serverappliance\web does not exist or I do not have the proper security settings. I have full rights on the box and on the domain and I verified that the path does exist. I created this site during the installation of Project Server, but it is not working properly.

And of course, neither one of you quoted back the original post making it
difficult for anyone to follow the thread without jumping around news
servers to try to locate it. That you have similar symptoms to a stated
problem doesn't mean you have the "same" problem. If you have a problem and
hope to get responses to your posts, post your own message and clearly state
your situation.

Hi Dan Zruna and All

For your problem and almost all your problems ladies and gentlemen, Make sure to do the following 3 steps

1- Make sure that the SharePoint Central Administration URL is correct. As it must be

http://<ServerName>:<PortNumber

[You can get the port number as follows: Start .. Administrative Tools .. Internet Information Services Management ... On the left pane, Expand the tree until you reach your Server. Under your Server, you will find Default Website. Right click on it and click properties. on the properties page appeared write down the number in TCP Port]. Go back to Project Web Access and type the URL mentioned above correctly with the Port number. Click, Test URL to make sure its working

2- On the folder you have installed Project Server 2003, find the Path [ \BIN\1033 ] ... you will find a file called [PSComPlus.exe] ... Run this program. [Note: This program is to set permission on the COM+ Component that Project Server use] ... When you the program is open, clear the checkbox of Analysis Services (OLAP) Access Identity and keep the other one. Now in the Windows SharePoint Services Administration Identity, type a username and password of a User with (((local Administration priveleges on the server that holds Windows SharePoint Services))). Now click on [Create/Update COM+ Apps]. If its successfully done, close the program

3- Now put the Project Server 2003 in the machine that holds Project Server 2003. When the wizard starts, Click on Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services. Now click Windows SharePoint Services Configuration Wizard. A new wizard will start. (By the way, this wizard is the [wsswiz.exe]). Go with the wizard and when finishes click Finish

now go back to the Project Web Access 2003 ... Click Admin .. Manage SharePoint Services .. now Click Save Changes

Thank you
Amjad Saf
