Project Server 2003 communications with SPS 2003

I'll try and make this as easy to follow as possible.

I have an SPS 2003 environment that has been configured to use client
certificates for authentication (smart cards). I also have Project Server
2003 that is supposed to connect to and communicate with this instance of
SPS. Project Server has also been configured to use client certificates for
authentication (smart cards).

However, when you access the main page of Project Web Access the web parts
that display the status of the users Updates, Tasks, Risks and Issues display
the following error message;

"There is a problem establishing a connection with the Web server running
Windows SharePoint Services. Contact your system administrator."

Obviously (to me anyway) something to do with using client certificates.

My question is what account does Project Server use when querying SPS to get
the information displayed under those headings? It looks to me like it could
be the service account that Project Server is running under but I really
don't know.

TIA!
