Project Server 2003 Service Pack 2a installation error.

We are currently trying to upgrade a virtualised environment hosting
Projects Server 2003 SP1 to the latest service pack SP2A. The database
part of the installation is completed successfully but the main section
of the upgrade fails almost immediately. We would appreciate any help
in diagnosing the problem. Outlined below is the environment, process,
error details and log files.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.


Scenario

Host Machine
------------
Server: Windows Server 2000 SP4, VMWare GSX Server


Virtual Machines (guests)
-------------------------
Web Server: Windows Server 2003 SP1, IIS, Project Server 2003 SP1
(11.1.2004.1707.15)

View Server: Windows Server 2000 SP4, IIS, SQL Reporting Services,
PS2003 View Notification Service, PS2003 Session Management Service

SQL Server: Windows Server 2000 SP4, SQL Server SP2 (8.0.760)


Installation Procedure
----------------------
Step 1: Run SQL script to upgrade the Project Server 2003 database on
the SQL Server. SUCCESSFUL

Step 2: Run the SP2a executable on the Web Server. FAILURE


Error Report
------------
The Executable extracts the PROJECTSVRSP2.msp file and progresses to
deploy the contained files. Before the deployment can be attempted the
process fails and displays a message box containing "The update cannot
be applied."

We have done the usual battery of tests, checked patch levels, deployed
on to a single server environment (with success), ensured there is
communication before the servers in the environment. The installation
failure produces three event log entries shown below and an installer
log file (attached).

Happy:

It's difficult to say given the virtual environment and it has been a while
since I used VM ware, but I can't help but notice that you specify SP2 for
SQL in your post. I hope you meant that you have at least SP3a.

FIXED

Install and run Microsoft Installer CleanUp Utility to remove the
Project Server 2003 instance from the MSI database. Install Project
Server 2003 and attach to existing database. Apply SP2a Service Pack.
