Project Server 2007 Farm to Farm question

O

Owe Evans

Hi,
anyone who knows if this scenario is possible:

Farm 1
Running Project 2007 on WSS (2.0)

Farm 2
Running MOSS 2007 hosting Project Workspaces for Project Server in Farm 1

- could it be done?
- what would be needed in order to get this working?
- what about the project workspace template, does it have to be
installed/part of Farm2?

Thanks,
Owe

Hello Owe

Unfortunately you cannot have PS 2007 running on WSS 2.0. Why don't you just
deploy PS 2007 on the MOSS farm, the benefit of doing this is that you would
get workflows for Proposals in PS 2007.

Don't forget you need to install and licence PS2007 on all servers in a MOSS
farm !

Paul: Yes, I am aware of that and that would be one of the "benefits" with
installing Project Server to Farm1 IF Farm2 (MOSS farm without Project
Server) is a rather large-scale server farm.

Dave: My mistake - yes sure, I know it only runs on Wss 3.0 not 2.0.

Reason to setup project server in a separate farm would be to not having to
pay for project server licenses for all servers in the (large-scale) Moss
farm.
The capacity planning shows a need only to run project server on a
small-farm only.

The thing is that document management in project workspaces could possible
be extensive and for that it would be suitable to store these sites on a
already existing (large-scale) MOSS farm.

Hello Owe,

Maybe I misunderstood what Microsoft told us but I am pretty sure that they
told us that we would have to license Project Server 2007 for the server we
were going to run it off and not for the other front end servers even though
we would be running our final deployment on a MOSS server farm.

Can someone please confirm if we need to get a Project Server license for
ALL the front end servers.

Thanks
Dave

Unfortunately it's not so.

Been in contact with MS reps now and the answer is ... Proj needs to be
installed on all boxes in farm ... and you need a license for each of the
boxes Proj is installed on regardless of whether Proj is running on them or
not ...

I suspects not everybody knows about this ...

Thanks,
Owe
