I have been talking with our Microsoft sales team and doing some research. I
understand that Server 2007 allows some schedule building in the web
front-end. This would allow some users to no longer need a client version of
MS Project Pro.

Can anyone elaborate on how much functionality is now available on the
front-end, in terms of schedule building?

Are there other improvements that remove the need for MS Project Pro? If so,
can you elaborate on what some of these improvement are?

Anyone who needs to schedule more than 5 or 6 tasks will need Project
Professional or a straight jacket!! Like all web applications, the UI is
painful and Project Pro can do it significantly faster.

So, if you need to actually schedule anything worthwhile (as opposed to
entering a handful of tasks, you still need Project Pro).

The scheduling is very very basic. It only allows F-S relationships, single
assignments, 100% allocation and a load of other limitations. This is a V1.0
cut and it shows. Assess before believing everything the MS sales reps tell
you.

If you use Resource Plans with the Proposal or Activity Plan, you can
schedule resources at less than full time (in hours, days or FTE
units) but I think it is still limited functionality due to be issues
with linking tasks, the process required to build a Resource Plan
(it's multistep and counter intuitive), and the other limitations
mentioned. I generally demo those features with clients and then show
them the alternate methods using Project Pro and very few clients have
committed to using Proposals or Activity Plans.

Hope this helps,
