project server 2007 master plan

Kerry

We have implemented master plans here, and inserted projects from multiple
PM’s. I have a problem though. Whenever I open the master(in working), all
the sub projects open read only. So when I create links, I can’t save the sub
projects. Even after I do a save as, and rename each sub project, the next
time I open the master, I have the problem again, with the newly named sub
projects. Am I doing something wrong, or that a feature?:)

Hi Kerry,

It depends on the purpose of your master project.

Scenario 1: Want to have consolidated read only view of multiple
projects in master project:

Insert sub projects in master as Read Only with Linked option. Here,
you do not have the ability to edit the sub projects from master
project.

When you are closing the master project, click No on save prompt for
each subproject. (Because your sub project is Read Only link, so you
do not have ability to save.)

Scenario 2: You are managing multiple projects in server and you want
to have consolidated listing of projects in single file, so you can
perform edits on all the projects from master:

Insert sub projects in master as RW with Linked option. You can
perform the edits to sub projects from master.

Please remember having sub projects in RW mode, whenever you open the
master, all the sub projects are available in RW mode and these
projects will not be available for others to open individual project
in RW mode.

When you are closing the master project, click on Yes on save prompt
for each subproject.

Thanks

I just created a master today, and made sure that the sub projects were
inserted RW. I'm still having the same problem. When I try to save the
master, it's says the proejcts are read only. Any ideas?

If you insert projects in RW to a master, it won't guarantee that the
subprojects will open up in RW when you open the master. You will see the
project icon in the indicator column and that will show you which of your
subprojects are in Read only mode. A few reasons why a plan that was
interested as RW would open up as read only in a master.

1) The inserted project could be check-out to another user already
2) The inserted project shows as check in pending or checked out in your
local cache (would need to clean your cache first)
3) You do not have permissions to open up the inserted project in RW mode.
