Project Server 2007 Queue Not Processing

W

William Busby

I have a fresh install of Project Server 2007. The install finished cleanly
and everything came up first time (kudo's to MS for getting the install
process improvements done). When I looked at the queue there were 8 jobs that
appear to be run as a result of the install. I created a project proposal and
activity plan which added three jobs each. None of the jobs have completed in
the past 8 hrs. I've restarted them (well... nothing said the restarted but I
did punch the button). Haven't canceled them cause I'd rather see them work
even though the've far exceeded the retry intervals with no status update
saying they failed. Looks like the queue is just stitting there. Is there any
way to kickstart the queue? I can't find a corresponding service to restart.

You should check and verfiy that the Microsoft Project Server Queuing service
is runing on your application server. If it is not running you should start
it. If it is running you should try to restart it.

Hope this helps.

The odd thing is that I have no services called 'Microsoft Project *'
installed. Could someone send me a list of the services and the associated
executables so I can validate what's missing?

R

Ray McCoppin

There should be two executables running on your app server.
Microsoft.Ofiice.Project.Server.Eventing.exe
Microsoft.Office.Project.Server.Queuing.exe

It should be in the path C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office Servers\12.0\Bin

Hope this helps.

Can you (or anyone) send me a regedit dump of the services installed below. I
have the binaries on my server but no services were defined for either of
them. I attempted to recreate the service entries but they fail to start with
an error that dependencies are missing.

Ok... made some progress on this but not enough. I found out how to install
the missing services using the 'installutil.exe <executable>' command in the
..Net Framework. The eventing service installed and started without a problem.
The queue service claimed to install but isn't listed in the services list.
When I attempted to reinstall it threw an exception because the services was
already installed. I can see the service in regedit, this is the export of
the service entry...

Any ideas on how to get this service to show and start?

More info, I found the MSPSQS service and gave it a display name which made
it appear in the list of services. When I start the service it immediately
dies with the following events in event viewer

8/25/2006 3:10:42 PM Office SharePoint Server Error 1096
6566 N/A ACAT0513 No sites defined. Service shutting down.

successfully.

I'm feeling like a hunting dog on a hot trail here but I've no idea where
it's leading. I can't find info on TechNet but I'm continue to research. If
anyone else has input I'd be glad to hear it.

you might want to try to reinstall Project Server 2007. Hopefully it will
repair the installation. But from my experence with this beta you might want
to start all over with a fresh install of the OS. This is a beta product.

W

William Busby

Generally good advise... unfortunately this is my sixth install (I'm either
masochistic or a slow learner, depends on who you ask). I've used three
different servers (4 were fresh rebuilds including OS) and the last two were
done after I redownloaded the image just in case I had a media problem. In
each case the result was exactly the same. I expect to have issues with beta
software, but this is the first time I've gotten such a consistent (and
debilatating) issue and found I appear to be alone on this one. I appreciate
the feedback, I honestly do. It's much better than posting in the blind even
if we haven't gotten it resolved.

I'm right there with you. We are having the exact same problem with
the queuing service dying and we have not yet found a resolution to the
issue.
