Project Server 2007 - Resource Substitution - Skill Profile

Andy S

I am using Project Server 2007 and attempting to learn the Resource
Substitution Wizard. On step 6 of the wizard, it shows a field
labeled Skill Profile. However, I have no idea how to fill this field
in with data. I have created custom fields to populate resource
skills, yet I have no idea how to bridge the gap between those fields
and this Skill Profile field which always appears.

Thanks for any help!

The reason for the name of that column is because Microsoft assumes, rightly
or wrongly, that you will use the Resource Substitution Wizard to match
Generic resources in a project with human resources that possses the right
SKILL plus have the availability to work on the project. Therefore, if you
intend to seriously use the Resource Substitution Wizard, I would suggest
you begin by doing some types of skills assessment in your organization.
Then you will need to create a custom enterprise resource Lookup Table
called something like Skills, that lists all of the skills that you intend
to use for skill matching. Then create a custom enterprise resource Field
called something like Skill, and attach the Skills lookup table to the
field. When you create the Skill field, be sure to select the "Use this
field for matching generic resources" option. When selected, this option
forces the Resource Substitution Wizard to use the Skill field for skill
matching, and also forces the Match button in the Build Team dialog to match
on the Skill field as well. Lastly, I am assuming that you are already
using Generic resources in your Enterprise Resource Pool. After you create
the custom Skill field, you will need to specify a Skill field value for
every human and Generic resource in your Enterprise Resource Pool. Hope
this helps.
