Project Server 2007 Takes a Long Time to Save

Project Server Slave

Hello,

Our client has a Project Server 2007 system. It's been running fine
for about 6 months now, without issue. It's a single server with MOPS
2007 and SQL Server 2005. Infrastructure update has been applied. So
down to the problem.

When doing a save from any client machine, whether it be a small 3
line project or a 250 line project, it takes at least 30 seconds,
sometimes longer to save. It used to be very fast, now its not. The
machine has 8 gigs of ram and Dual Proc, Dual Core, so its not a
hardware bottleneck. I've restarted the queue service, rebooted the
server but nothing is helping. I have ensured that things are being
processed by the queue just fine, no blocked or waiting to be
processed jobs. No event log or ULS log errors. I increased the size
of the database's to 10MB instead of 1MB, so that the I/O doesn't stop
when its increasing the database size. We've tried the saving of
projects in 2 Project Server instances, both running on the same
server and it happens in both. It seems to be a Queue or SQL Server
issue. It sits at 0% and estimates 66 seconds, but then takes 30
seconds or more. There is almost no usage on the server, so its not
being bombarded with requests. Nothing else runs on the machine. I am
running out of ideas, anyone suggest anything that could help?

Check that there is sufficient free space in the databases.

Defrag\rebuild the DB indexes and update the statistics

Defrag the DB files

Are any other apps consuming SQL services from this box? Could they be
causing these performance issues?

Paul,

I did those things to no avail. I did find out that the problem is
caused by a bug introduced with the Infrastructure update. The KB
article is 956061. It's not public but you can call in and get the
hot fix for free. Thanks to Adrian Jenkins for pointing me in the
right direction!
