project server 2007 users and resources

Mr Major Thorburn

On setting up a new project 2007 server I used the groups option to identify
the users who would use the server as users, resource managers and project
managers via groups in Active Directory and then selected synch to populate
the user list.
When I came to use a user in a project as a resource I found I had no
resources so went to add the user in the resources list.
The problem I have is that I cannot add these users into the resources list
because it complains about them being already in the system.

I am now faced with havng to delete the users from the users list, add them
into the resources list and tnen re-synch the groups with AD.

This is only a test so there are not many to do but what I am very worried
about is doing this in a live environment were we have hundreds of peoples
who are going to need access to the server and are resources for the projects.

Is there any hope for me?

Please help me if you can.

Regards, Major.
p.s. Major is my Christian name ;-)

Sync users via Enterprise Resource Group Settings, under "Other Settings".
This will add them to the ERP. User security group sync options to further
extend the security model and dictate which users in the ERP can perform
which roles.

Are you looking in Resource Center or in the Manage Users?

The Manage Users will not show any users once you have over a certain amount
and it will look like there are no users when in fact you just have to do a
partial text search to retrieve a subset of the users.

This is true, you will need to determine whether you are dividing your
[Finish Variance] by the [Duration] or the [Baseline Duration] for example.

The AD group synch process works fine. The problem I have is that the AD
synch process only populates the users list and not the resources list. When
I come to try to add a resource for a user that has access via the AD synch
process I cannot add them because the system states the user is already in
use. If I add the user in the resources first and then do the AD synch it all
works ok.
The manual effort in registering the hundreds of users I have as resources
is what I am trying to avoid.

Have you tried NZ Projects suggestion to synch your ERP instead of the
groups? This is similar to 2003, if you only synchronize with security
groups, the resources will not be added to the ERP but if you synch with the
ERP then they will be added to the ERP and also be added to the Team Members
security group.

Jonathan, I have looked for the "Other Settings" in the Server Settings and
Enterprise Resources but cannot see anything like that on my Project Server
2007.
I have also done a search through online help.
Where would I find the "Other Settings".

I am accessing the Administration via PWA. Is there another way to
administrate project server 2007?

Regards, Major.
