Project Server and SPS/SqlSvr

I am trying to build a Project 2003 server and it is on a Win2003 AD server,
with IIS, DNS and SqlSvr2000. It all seems to be working ok but when I try
to logon to MS Proj from a client machine(collaboration) it always says I
have a bad user name and password. I am logged onto the client machine as a
Domain user without any problems and I use that same user to try to logon to
Project Server. I have Sharepoint services 2.0 loaded and it seems to be
working ok, I have created sites, added the users etc.

my URL for the server is http://mandev06/Projectserver and it vaildates fine
under the Collaboration tab of the Tools/Options menu.

The ProjectServer virtual web site is under the default web site and tbe
Sharepoint Central Administration is a separate site equal with the Default
Web site. Is this correct?

Also in Sharepoint Configuration Database page it had a sql database name
that must have been generated by the configuration wizard but that name is
not in my instance of Sql Server. Is that normal? There was a 'Project
Server' database that was automatically created though.

I installed everything following the Installation Guide that is on the
Project 2003 server CD(Twice!)

Also it seems that you really should run the Sharepoint Services
Configuration Wizard immediately after installing it because the web page
that comes up is not the one the installation guide mentions, you have to
hunt around and terminology is changed.

Dave:

The first time you logon to Project Server, you must use the built-in
Administrator account. That would be "administrator" without the quotes
using the password you supplied during installation. This is the only
account the system recognizes until you've created others.

If you installed SharePoint correctly and completely for Project Server, you
should have two WSS databases, one configuration database and one content
database. If you don't see these, you made a mis-step in following the
installation directions. You may not have extended a site yet.

The SharePoint Central Administration site is installed on a virtual server
running on a port selected by the installation routine. If what you mean by
"equal" is "at the same level" then the answer is yes. These are both called
"virtual servers" in IIS.

I'm confused by your last statement/question, I think that may be due to
your confusion about SharePoint or an incomplete installation.

I have used the 'Administrator' account and then I get the MS Project EULA
and when I click on that it says it can't download the Project web controls.

Also, after building the server and adding Sharepoint services and Project
Server I can no longer get Windows Updates, I get a red X after it gins for a
while. This has also happened to a Proj 2002 server I had up and running on
Win2000svr.

I am going to uninstall Project and sharepoint and start again, I will
delete the web sites in IIS and application pools. Are there any main keys to
know about during the reinstall?

Dave:

Make sure you remove the msprojectserveruser and msprojectuser logins from
SQL and the Project Server database before reinstalling. Follow the single
server installation exactly. The only modification I recommend is to create
a separate virtual server on a different port to extend for SharePoint for
Project Server use. IOW, don't use the default web site for both Project
Server and WSS. Although you can do this without any problem, it's a little
cleaner separating church and state.

Gary, I did remove those accounts before the reinstall. Let me get back to
my first issue with the install. After installing SPS, it says the Config
Admin Virtual Server page will come up. I don't get that, the Team Web site
page opens up. From there on I can't follow the instructions. The Team Web
site is the default web site and the SharePoint Central Administration is a
separate web site. If I run the Sharepoint Config. Wizard then I can go to
the Central Admin site since I know the port it is using. Where might I be
going wrong? I have installed Sharepoint three times now and I have gotten
the same results all three times. I am using the stsv2.exe to install
Sharepoint that I downloaded from MS. I then run the Sharepoint config wizard
that is on the Project Server 2003 CD.

Thanks so much for the quick responses, it really helps keep the frustration
level to a tolerable level.
