Project Server Archive Database Purpose

I am under the impression that the archive database is used primarily for
archiving completed / cancelled projects. My question: Can the archive db be
used for periodic snapshots of project information (eg weekly) in order to be
able to extract rend information over time?

I believe the main purpose of the archive database is for recovery purposes.
You can restore projects from the archive database from PWA>Server Settings
if the project needs to be reverted back to a previous version and you do
not want to lose the unique IDs. I don't think it was intended for
extracting project information over time.

I don't think that's the intended purpose either. You can save
versions of projects but I think that their are easier methods:

1. Use Data Analysis to create a view containing the information you
are interested. Export to Excel but don't enable the link to Analysis
Services.
2. Use SQL Reporting and save the reports to an archive.
3. If you don't have a lot of projects, I would really consider using
the Visual Reports tool in Project Pro. You have the ability to
create a virtual cube and to save the project database as a snapshot.
You could define the report and provide it to your PM's to use or you
could do it. Visual Reports will use Enterprise data.
