Project Server Database (SQL vs MSDE)

D

Doug

I am implementing a small office Project installation w/ a few users and
Project Server on a w2k server. I don't want to invest in SQL and am
wondering what limitations I may end up with using MSDE for the database.

I also bought a few Proj Server Cal's so some exec's could monitor the
status of the projects.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Doug

Hi Doug,

There are certainly limitations to MSDE. You can only have up to 25
concurrent connections to the database. Keep in mind that I believe
'connections' does not mean users (but I could be wrong). I've included a
link below that highlights the major differences, but the most important
bullet point for you is "No OLAP". This means Project Server portfolio
reporting capabilities will not be allowed with your install. This is
usually one of the key reasons for purchasing the product.

Also, the Microsoft Project Server Installation Guide states the following:
"You can use MSDE 2000 to host your Projec Server database. However, MSDE
has significant performance limitations and is not recommended for anything
beyond the most basic test deployment". To get all the details, I've
attached a link to the guide here:
