Project Server Deployment

Hi,

Anybody have any ideas on the deployment of Project Server 2003 in terms of
increasing speeds?

Server wise we will have 2 high spec Servers one for Project Server and the
other with SQL 2000 (which will also house DB's for other small apps). these
will be on the same LAN.

We will have roughly 100 MS Project Professional users (eventually) running
in 4 different offices. These will connect via our WAN with bandwidths
ranging from 512k to 1Mb. The project sizes will reach about 1.5Mb and we
will have roughly 300 to 400 projects up on the system at any one time.

Have tested opening projects remotely (from test server) and they seem quite
slow, but I assume this is purely down to bandwidth. Terminal Services may be
an option, but that brings it's own problems.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hi Robin,
In terms of speed, MS recommends a minimum10Mbit/sec link between Project
Pro users, and the server infrastructure. Remember, Proj Pro connects
directly to SQL for ODBC heavy lifting.
Recommended 1Gbit/sec links between EPM server components.
Though bandwidth is very important, when you go over a WAN, latency can be a
biger foe . If you Ping your SQL box from a remote Proj Pro workstation and
receive anything greater than 30ms reply times, you might seriously consider
Terminal Services.

Hope this helps,

Robin: Did you run into any issues, assuming you went ahead with TS
implementation? I have a similar situation as you have. However, when I use
TS to bring up MS Project 2003 on the server, I can connect to project server
(but then, I am a server admin, too). However, rest of PMs cannot establish
the connection from MS Project 2003 and the MS Project Server for some
reason. When they hit "test connection" their sessions just hang. Did you
run in to that? Did you find any documentation regarding how to configure MS
PRoject 2003 using TS?

Thanks!
