Project Server Deployment

If I were to install MS Project Server 2007 with web access on one server,
using SQL Server 2005 Express, could I upgrade at a later time to Enterprise
SQL Server 2005 on a different server? The beginning installation will be on
a virtual server, because our facility is not up and running. Will I
exerience deployment problems when I attempt to transfer from a one tiered
approach to a two tiered approach?

Hi John,

moving Project Server 2007 to another environment is not easy. We have
experienced many issues and after many many hours of try and error came up
with a process, which requires much manual handleing. So in short, it will
not be easy to move the environment, but generally certainly possible.
Hope this helps

Yes, I think you might run into issues. I believe that the new way to
migrate whole environment including WSS content requires that you use
SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration rather than the standard SQL backup
and restore that you are used to from the 2003 version. I was told that
this can only work if you are transferring from two environments that have
the same number of tiers but I have not validated that this is true. This
means that a 1 tier to 2 tier would not work, but again, I have not
validated this.

Mind you, this is only if you need to migrate Project Server and Content.
If you don't care about content then you could just backup and restore the 4
Project Server DBs regardless of tiers.

Yeap John, you are spot on. If you are "only" after the settings as such, you
can use the Project Server DB's, export the workspace stp file ( if you have
changed it) and manually amend the PWA site ( if you have changed this too).

Wouldnt it be nice to simply point to the "new" URL and say restore :) Live
could be soooooo much fun :)
