Project Server OLAP Cubes - ?

Peter M.

Hello,
Another question concerning Project Server version 2007. We have not yet
implemented the solution yet, but are testing at the moment. Now I am really
interested in the Cube feature, but do no really understand it. What are
"measures" or "dimensions"? Why can I only select custom fields, but no
default fields? I do not understand what this stands for. However, I realise
that we will need this feature to produce several views for analysis.

Now, I would really appreciate some input on this and/or appropriate web
sites describing this feature. In most books, this is just briefly explained
and leaves me pretty confused.

Thanks,
Peter.

Hi Peter,

Think of measures as the fields you can use to do arithmetic with (ie.,
work, remaining work, actual cost, etc). Measure are listed under the totals
heading within the Field List in the Portfolio Analyzer. You may think of
dimensions as things you can not do arithmetic on (ie., they are hierachical
folder like structrures which are created when customizing an enterprise
field as an Outline Code). Example of standard dimensions are: Resource
Name, Resource RBS, Project Name, Version, etc. Custom ones could be:
department, skills, etc. At least up until version 2003, the only custom
fields that you could add to the Field List were default are custom Outline
Codes.

I found that classes given by IIL (e.g., the MSP Black Belt class) go into
this sort of thing.
