project server/sharepoint private/public access on single box?

Concerning the connection between project server and sharepoint whereby
documents may be attached to projects....

As I understand it, actual private url addresses (server names and
ports) are used at the top of the "managing windows sharepoint
services" screen along with the extranet address for public access.

Here's my question. We have both project server and windows sharepoint
on the same box. Is it true that in order for both private and
public access to work, you need two different installations? If not,
what is required other than supplying the extranet address?

Right now, we require VPN for using the Project Pro client. However,
the PWA can be accessed via VPN or outside the VPN. For the most part,
we wanted the general public at our institution to be able to view
project plans. The tricky part there is that if you are accessing the
PWA via the public address, when you attempt to go to the document
workspaces, it chokes, even if an extranet address is supplied.

Again, is it true that in order for both private and public access to
work, you need two different installations (two different boxes)? I
read that somewhere on a recent post. If not, specifically what is
required other than supplying the extranet address?

Thanks,
Andy

Technically you can use both on the same box for external users as well. Just
make sure:

1. DNS Configurations
2. Required ports accessible from outside (ports which sharepoint & PWA are
using)
3. If using any network firewall, make sure it is configured to allow
traffic to both sites.

Before these see if you can access you sharepoint site externally from that
box. If not then you might have some configuration issues.

To answer your question, the answer is no you do not need to install
Project Server twice.

As FaisalM has replied, you need to check the DNS entries and make sure
that users can get the hostname resolved.
