Project Server Spooler error 0x80004005 when publishing project

A few times a week, the project manager has error 0x80004005 in his Project
Server Spooler when publishing the project. When he retries some minutes
later, there is no problem.

On the server, I see the IIS Worker Process encountered a problem. I can
send the error report to Microsoft. The error signature says: "Reporting
queued error: faulting application w3wp.exe, version 6.0.3790.3959, faulting
module PJMSGHLR.DLL, version 11.0.2003.828, fault address 0x00003512."

The documentation on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/328249 tells that there
are insufficient rights, but I've checked this and everything seems ok.

I use a Windows 2003 server with Project Server 2003.

Check the permissions on the viewdrop folder. Make sure 'Everyone' has
access to the viewdrop folder.
See this KB article:

What service pack level are your running? Make sure to install the
latest service pack! remember that for version 2003, you need to install
the service pack on ALL clients before installing the service pack on
the server.

I hope this helps,
Hans

The viewdrop folder has 'Everyone' with full permissions.

We use Microsoft Office Project Professional 11.0.2003.0816.15. How do I
know if this version has the latest service pack?

Where can I find the version info and service pack info on the server? In
Web Access there is no such thing as help > about.

I think the person who installed the Server applied all service packs. But

Your clients are without any service packs, and that's a big problem...
With version 2003, your clients must ALWAYS have the same or higher
service pack level than your server! If not, this might result in
unexpected behaviour.

You can check the service pack level of the client in Add/Remove
programs, but also based on the product number.

In PWA, you can hover over the Help button in the top right corner to
check the version level.

x.x.2003.x = RTM
x.x.2004.x = SP1
x.x.2005.x = SP2
x.x.2006.x = SP3

So the first thing to do is update ALL your project professional clients
with the latest service pack!

I hope this helps,
Hans
