Project Server Views Notification Service

I just installed MPS2003 and i have 2 issues: i can't build the cube and i
can't see the details of the projects. I created a project with 2 tasks and 5
resources, for testing.

When i click to build the cube it stays forever with a message like this:
The cube building process was initiated on 2/15/2006 at 3:10 PM
The cube is not created.

When i click on a project in Project Central i get this message:
"There is no information to display in this view
Either the project manager has not published the project plan or there is no
information in the project plan to display. "

When I click the resource tab i get this message:
There are no resources to display in this view.
You either do not have permissions to see any resources in this view or
there are currently no resources in the Project Server database. Contact your
server administrator.

I assume that is a coomon reason, that why i write all of this.

I appreciate any help or sugestions!

cube in sql analyzer - there is documentation on Microsoft site to explain
this.

Hi,
I realized that i get the same error in App Log when i publish a project
from MS Project Professional. The project appears in Project Central, but
when i click on it i getbthis message:
"There is no information to display in this view
Either the project manager has not published the project plan or there is no
information in the project plan to display. "

Any ideas why?
I appreciat any help that I can get, as i really don't know what to do. Many

The cube access is described in the project server security group guide. As
to the other problem, I assume that the plan has actually got tasks on it,
and that you published with no errors.

We are having the same problem. We have 4 seperate environments but I
am only having the problem in 2 of them, the larger of the
environments.

We have a Stage and a Production environment with the following
identical hardware:

2 MS Project Servers
1 Views notification, OLAP, Session server
1 SQL Server

I have been having the problem in our Production environment of the
OLAP getting stuck in the initiated state about once a week. We
restart the VWNOTIFY.EXE and everything is fine again for another week
or so. I saw that SP2a had a new version of VWNOTIFY.EXE and was
hoping this would help my problem. I have been working it up to
production, but as soon as I loaded it in my Stage environment, my OLAP
started failing.

I installed SP2a on all servers. All servers are on latest SQL patch.
I have just rerun the com+ utility.

I have started getting the following errors (which lead me to re-run
com+)

I have activated OLAP Logging, but if the build doesn't finish or
actually fail, the log never gets written.

One more side note. If I use "Use the fixed date range specified below
" instead of "Use the earliest project start date and the latest
project finish date " in PWA when I run the build, it will work. I
have taken the start date all the way back to the creation date of the
server (10-4-2004) and it will run successfully.

It fails if I use "Use the earliest project start date and the latest
project finish date" option.

I have yet to see a resolution any where on the internet for this. We
also have a current ticket open directly with Microsoft on this but
still no scussess.

We are having the same problem with the OLAP cube build. We have 4
environments testing must go though before anything can be put into
production. I am having the problem in Production which is of course
the largest environment for data.

I noticed that SP2a has a new VWNOTIFY.EXE file and was hoping that
getting this SP into Production would help my problem. My Stage and
production environments are created identically to each other. The
Server configurations are as follows for both environments:

2 - MS Project 2003 servers (load balanced)
Windows Server 2003 IIS 6.0
Wss
SQL Analysis Services (and DSO) SP3
SQL Reporting Services

1 - Views Notification Server
Windows Server 2003 IIS 6.0
Project Server 2003 Views Processing
Project Server 2003 Session Mgmt
SQL Analysis Services (and DSO) SP3

1 - Database Server (running multiple instances of SQL)
SQL Server Analysis Services (OLAP Repository)
Project Database
WSS Database

All Servers have SP2a, SQL same SP level, Com+ utility re-ran today.

So, I installed SP2a into Stage where the OLAP was running just fine.
After the install, the OLAP started to fail with the following errors
in the log.

If I try and build the cube with the "Use the earliest project start
date and the latest project finish date" in PWA it will fail.
However, if I build the cube with the option of "Use the fixed date
range specified below" and set the start date all the way back to the
creation of the server (10-1-2004) the cube will build with no problem.

In Production environment, the OLAP will build successful for about a
week then I have to restart the VWNOTIFY.EXE service. Then it will
build again for another week or so. I can not put SP2a into production
until I have the OLAP back up and running in Stage.

I have been all over the internet, but there seems to be no solution to
this problem. I have seen fingers pointed at the SP levels, but I have
made sure everything is at the same level in every type of SP.

I even have an open and active case directly with Microsoft about this
issue. So, on that note, any help would be appreciated. I am posting
on many sites because someone may see something that no one else has
seen and be able to lend a hand.

After upgrading to SP2a, I began having this issue with the OLAP cube build
never finishing.

My research has found four consistent elements: 1) the ViewDrop directory
will have a large number (200+) .xml files, 2) the VWNotify.exe service is
steadily using 25% of the CPU, 3) the database server is at a steady 0% CPU
usage and 4) I am unable to to stop and restart the VWNotfy service via
Computer Manager but can kill the process via Task Manager.

So far, I have been able to narrow down the .xml files that were causing the
ViewDrop backlog by removing all files from the directory and adding each one
back individually. It boiled down to two projects both with Out-of-Sync
errors. When the errors were fixed the problem was eliminated. FYI, we use
Protected Actual.

I can only remember having this happen once before upgrading to SP2a and the
determination was that a SQL Server backup had hung and deleting that process
and restarting the servers resolved the issue.

production. I am having the problem in Production which is of course
the largest environment for data.

I noticed that SP2a has a new VWNOTIFY.EXE file and was hoping that
getting this SP into Production would help my problem. My Stage and
production environments are created identically to each other. The
Server configurations are as follows for both environments:

2 - MS Project 2003 servers (load balanced)
Windows Server 2003 IIS 6.0
Wss
SQL Analysis Services (and DSO) SP3
SQL Reporting Services

1 - Views Notification Server
Windows Server 2003 IIS 6.0
Project Server 2003 Views Processing
Project Server 2003 Session Mgmt
SQL Analysis Services (and DSO) SP3

1 - Database Server (running multiple instances of SQL)
SQL Server Analysis Services (OLAP Repository)
Project Database
WSS Database

All Servers have SP2a, SQL same SP level, Com+ utility re-ran today.

So, I installed SP2a into Stage where the OLAP was running just fine.
After the install, the OLAP started to fail with the following errors
in the log.

If I try and build the cube with the "Use the earliest project start
date and the latest project finish date" in PWA it will fail.
However, if I build the cube with the option of "Use the fixed date
range specified below" and set the start date all the way back to the
creation of the server (10-1-2004) the cube will build with no problem.

In Production environment, the OLAP will build successful for about a
week then I have to restart the VWNOTIFY.EXE service. Then it will
build again for another week or so. I can not put SP2a into production
until I have the OLAP back up and running in Stage.

I have been all over the internet, but there seems to be no solution to
this problem. I have seen fingers pointed at the SP levels, but I have
made sure everything is at the same level in every type of SP.

I even have an open and active case directly with Microsoft about this
issue. So, on that note, any help would be appreciated. I am posting
on many sites because someone may see something that no one else has
seen and be able to lend a hand.

The cube access is described in the project server security group guide. As
to the other problem, I assume that the plan has actually got tasks on it,
and that you published with no errors.

Hi,
I realized that i get the same error in App Log when i publish a project
from MS Project Professional. The project appears in Project Central, but
when i click on it i getbthis message:
"There is no information to display in this view
Either the project manager has not published the project plan or there is no
information in the project plan to display. "

Any ideas why?
I appreciat any help that I can get, as i really don't know what to do. Many

For the cube building you will need to have correct permissions into the OLAP
cube in sql analyzer - there is documentation on Microsoft site to explain
this.

let me know if you can't find it and I will see if I can remember which
document helps

I just installed MPS2003 and i have 2 issues: i can't build the cube and i
can't see the details of the projects. I created a project with 2 tasks and 5
resources, for testing.

When i click to build the cube it stays forever with a message like this:
The cube building process was initiated on 2/15/2006 at 3:10 PM
The cube is not created.

When i click on a project in Project Central i get this message:
"There is no information to display in this view
Either the project manager has not published the project plan or there is no
information in the project plan to display. "

When I click the resource tab i get this message:
There are no resources to display in this view.
You either do not have permissions to see any resources in this view or
there are currently no resources in the Project Server database. Contact your
server administrator.

I assume that is a coomon reason, that why i write all of this.

I appreciate any help or sugestions!

I believe we are having several issues.

1) I am sure we have plans with Out-of Sync errors, and we also use
protected actuals.

2) I noticed that if I looked at the .xml file for the cube build, we
had a start date going back to 1984 and an end date in 2049. I set the
date range in PWA to be a fixed date range and this helped.

I am stll hveing the problem of VWNOTIFY hanging and needing a restart
occasionally, but I believe this is related to bad data (protected
actuals in 1984 and dates that are to far out). Our system was
implementd in 2004 and we are not sure how we got 1984 date with
protected actuals in them.

Microsoft is worthless in helping with the resolution. There answer to
everything is either add a service pack (we have the latest including
the SP2a post hotfix that just came out on 3-22-06), or add more
hardware to brute force through the problem.
