Project Site not created automatically

My scenario is different than most posts here with a similar problem.
In my situation, Project Server and WSS are running on different
servers. All functionality through Project Server with Sharepoint
works just fine with the exception of the auto creation of the site
when a project is published.

Within the Admin section of PWA for Manage Sharepoint Services, it's
set to auto-create the sites when pubished, and all screen panels look
good. There are no blank fields and the email addresses for Site Owner

have a value. All access to sites, issues, risks, and documents are
just fine. Clicking on existing site links all work to. The Sharpoint

Admin site and Project Server public document library links work fine
too.

After the project is published, I can go into the Admin section of PWA
and create the site manally and it works just fine. They can be
created manually but not automatically.

Both PCcomplus and proxycfg utilities have been run several times. The

domain account used for sharepoint access through Project Server is an
administrator on both physical servers and in both SQL Server
databases. I've even tried several accounts. In addition, I can
actually log into the PWA as this domain account and manually create
the site and it works fine too so the account has the permissions to do

it but it's just the auto-creation piece that isn't working.

I keep thinking it's maybe something with the proxycfg but everything
else works fine communicating with sharepoint WSS.

Has anyone seen this before or have any ideas or suggestions on what
might cause this?

If you specified a SharePoint Extranet Address, and you used "/projects" at
the end of the URL as the example on the page says instead of "/sites" ,
that will prevent the automatic creation of WSS site. Change it to "/sites"
or remove the SharePoint Extranet Address entirely and see if that helps.

Hi,

I do not have any entry in the Extranet Address - however, I am using
/projects.

Sharepoint Central Administration URL:
https://dnsname.xx.net:13432
Create a Site under this Sharepoint URL:
https://dnsname.xx.net:443/projects

Are you saying you can't change the name of the location from sites to
projects? I have Sharepoint Portal Server installed and I'm trying to
decipher from regular sites versus project sites. I can try this to
see if it makes a difference - but I would have thought I could specify
anywhere, add it to the Managed paths in sharepoint and then install
the project WSS piece to /projects.

Do you know if it makes a difference using the 'Servername' versus the
'DNS' name in the URL for where to create the sites:
https://dnsname.xx.net:443/projects vs https://servername:443/projects?

Thanks!

Project Server was my first exposure to WSS, so you can take some of this
with a grain of salt.

If you installed it from the Project Server CD and set it to "/projects"
right from the beginning, I don't know why it wouldn't work. That being
said, I have had a heck of a time getting the WSS SP2 stuff to work when set
up differently from the defaults.

Normally the Project Server WSS SP2 sites would be on a different virtual
server than regular SharePoint, wouldn't it?

Trying to use fully qualified names with the WSS stuff was a challenge to
say the least. I had to install it that way from the beginning. When I
would install it as servername and try to change it to fqdn, it wouldn't
validate.

Trying to get WSS to use SSL was also a big problem. I ended up having to
make the "create a site" link HTTP with the FQDN and then put in an Extranet
Address with HTTPS & FQDN and changing an undocumented registry key to get
WSS SP2 to use the Extranet link instead. Under the Project Server registry
entries, there's a key named "IsExtranet". The default is 0 and you have to
change it to a 1 to make it work. If the "create a site" link specified
HTTPS, it would never validate.

Hi Ray,

Many thanks for the undocumented registry key.
Nice to know these tid bits

What I did to switch over to SSL was to use the STSADM.exe command in
SharePoint. More specifically using the setadminport option with SSL
parameter.

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/wss/2/all/adminguide/en
-us/stsk01.mspx
OR
http://tinyurl.com/d3u74

Once you've switched it over, add the web cert to the WSS and Project
Server (both on the same machine in this case) and change the security
settings on IIS

Then reconfigure PWA to use the new https URL.
It worked for me

Cheers,

Hi Rolly,

I never had a problem with getting the admin site to run on SSL, just the
WSS/PWA part. If I installed Project Server and specified HTTPS for all the
links, it would work. But when I went to the SharePoint Site Administration
page, even though it worked, it would never validate.
