Project Standard: Are different rights for team members possible without server?

Hello,
we are planning to buy MS Project and can't see the difference between
professional/standard version. Postings show that we are not alone ;-)

It seems as if standard is good enough for our small team.

But we want to give different team members different views on project
data and tasks. And not all member should have the right to modify
data.

So, is this possible without the server version? Or do we have to
create different files for different members and do the rest with
operating systems rights management?

Thanks for your help.

For Project 2003 (and if you haven't already purchased, it doesn't make
sense IMHO to buy an earlier version) only Pro will talk to Project Server.
Standard is stand-alone only and has no collaboration tools. Pro adds the
enterprise management tools. If you use Standard, all persons with access
to the files will have the same rights. You can mark a file read only at
the OS level or restrict access to the folder it is in and make it so it
cannot be overwritten but nothing will stop someone with read access from
opening and saving it as another file with full read/write access. If they
can open the file, they can see all the data so if it's necessary to
restrict access to certain information - salary info for example - you'll
need to create separate files.
