Project Viewer

Almo

One of my customers has asked about rolling Project Viewer
out across the network (to augment licensed copies of
Project 98). He says that it is a 'freebie' that does not
require licenses etc. I have not heard of it and a trawl
through the MS websites has proved fruitless so far - Can
anyone help?

Many Thanks,

Almo

Your customer is misinformed. There is no free viewer for MS Project. You
can save the project as an HTML file and he can view it with his web
browser.

I use an application from Afinion called "Project on Web Viewer"
(http://www.afinion.com/). This application works exteremely well for us as
we recieve MPP files quite often and need to view them and/or print them
out. However, we do not have the need to manipulate or create our own MPP
files so owning MS Project is not really necessary. Unlike other viewers,
Project on Web Viewer reads the native MPP file so there is no need for the
creator of the MPP file to convert it to another format. While it is not a
free viewer, Project on Web Viewer has met my needs quite well and is very
cost effective (it is better then shelling out the total cost of a full MS
Project license). I would highly recommend it. I hope this helps. Post
back if you have other questions.

OK. However, one might be concerned about the security of sending your
project or your company's project across the internet. I think most people
would want a viewer on their own computer ala Word and Powerpoint.

Its EXTREMELY slow even on a small project. It took well over 10 minutes to
open a 90KB file and I have a broadband connection. I finally had to kill it
because I couldn't stand to wait that long. I would never recommend this to
anyone.

The best solution I have found is to print the project to a PDF file using a
utility and distribute the PDF. Its small and everyone has the Acrobat
Reader to view it, they cannot change the project, and I can control what is
published.

Dave
Or you use our viewer which reads the mpp or database directly. So you save
time.

Soon also we read the 98 mpp if there is a need for

Your customer might be thinking of the free Milestones Viewer, offered
for users of our Milestones Software. Milestones Project Companion is
an add on product for Microsoft Project. It is used to produce
presentation-quality schedules from MS Project MPP files and works with
Project 98, 2000, 2002, 2003 and Project Server.

Once a Microsoft Project schedule has been published with Milestones
Project Companion, the resulting Milestones schedule can be freely
distributed to others. Milestones Project COmpanion, the publishing
software is $149 per licensed user, but the only ones who would need it
would be those who have a need to publish schedules. Others, who have
only a need to view schedules would be able to use the free Milestones
Viewer. Here's a link you can check out for more details:
