How do I modify the Workspace webparts arrangement so that I can eg get the
webparts in the left column to spread right across the page ie so there is
only really one column?

Hi Steve,
the best way is to use Sharepoint designer. Sharepoint designer allows you
to add web part sections to the workspace. Have a look on youtube and search
for SharePoint designer videos, there are some videos that show you how to
use SharePoint Designer.
