Project98 with XP

First, Project98 is more capable, much more capable, than I need for our
small operation, and I'm inherently a cheap bastard. I've recently upgraded
to WindowsXP and before I spend the effort to load 98 under XP, I'd like to
know if there are any issues surrounding this. So . . . can I go forward
loading 98 under XP, or should I buy the latest Project upgrade?

Thanks!

P98 works under XP.

Microsoft also delivered a subsequent release P98 SR-1. This is not a small
service pack that you apply to P98 but is, instead, a full package. It,
too, works under XP.

I am not aware of any issues with Proj 98 running under Win XP and as
far as I know you should have no problems in that regard. OTOH, there
were signifigant improvements since P98, at the 98->2000 progression
especially, and if your budget will allow it an upgrade to the more
current releases would be advisable IMHO. If you don't feel the cost of
a jump all the way to Proj 2003 is justified, and it is a signifigant
cost, at least check into eBay or similar sources for Project 2000 or
2002/XP. While Project Server and EPM tools may be overkill for smaller
operations, the newer features like deadline dates for tasks and
multiple baselines are very useful at any scale of complexity.

I guess it doesn't much matter at this point. When I tried to load 98, it
told me I had installed it on more than one computer . . . DUH . . . and
won't let me install it on my newest computer! I've installed it on every
computer I've purchased in since my original P98 purchase in 1997 without
problems, why now!

Microsoft doesn't support P98, so I can't find a telephone support number to
call . . . most discouraging!

Any ideas?

Thanks!

HUH? Project 98 gave you the "installed on more than one computer"
message??? That sounds more like the activation routine that came in
with the Win/Office XP products kicking in. Project 98 didn't require
activation or even registration so. It's been a while since I installed
P98 but as I recall it came on CD and there is no way the original disk
could have been written to in order to record that it even *had* been
installed. Are you sure it's coming from the P98 install and not
Windows XP itself detecting it had previously been installed on another
machine? You are aware that WinXP has an activation scheme that
enforces the license restriction of only one CPU allowed per retail copy
of Windows, are you not? If your copy of the XP CD had been used for an
install on another computer at any time in the past and was activated at
that time, it detects that fact when you attempt to activate on the new
machine and refuses to run after I believe it is 5 startups. If you
acquired the WinXP CD as an OEM distribution accompanying another
computer it may have been activated by the mfgr before shipping without
you're knowing it and so you didn't realize that CD was then forever
locked in to that one cpu. I doubt that Project 98 is the culprit here.
