okay, so i hooked up my projector and switched everything on. The projector
is working but it is only displaying the background image from the desktop
and none of the icons from the desktop. How do I switch the display to show
that actual desktop?

What you are seeing is an extension of your desktop off to the right (or
left) of your computer monitor. You will probably find that you can point
there with the mouse or even drag items there!

The remedy depends on the video card type and make but you are basically
looking for a "clone screen" setting instead of extend screen

Hi Suzer,

As John says, you're seeing an extended desktop.

You can choose to have Powerpoint display the slideshow on this external
monitor/projector as follows:

- Select Slideshow/Set up show

- You will see a section titled "Multiple monitors". There should be a
drop-down box that's labelled "Display slideshow on:". Click the drop-down
arrow and choose whichever is the OTHER option selected right now (Windows
may pick up the device name of the projector, for example).

- Click OK to close the dialogue box.

Now if you run the show it will display on the external monitor/projector.

Note that if you follow these instructions you won't see your slides on your
laptop PC, only on the projector. So if you click the checkbox that says
"Show Presenter View" in that dialogue box, you'll see the Presenter
interface that you may find useful.

If you want both screens to display the slideshow at the same time, then
follow John's advice.

Cheers,

Geoff
