ProjectServer2003 move

M

Mark Byington

Is there a way or are there utilities somewhere to move
ProjectServer2003 from server 'ABC' to server '123' without doing an install
on the new server?

That is, we would like to basically backup everything on server 'ABC' and
restore it to the new server '123'. The problem, of course, is going to be
the registry, IIS, and other elements will have the old 'ABC' references
instead of the new '123' references.

AND, we will NOT be able to call the new server 'ABC'. It has to be a
different name.

Any thoughts, ideas, expert advise greatly sought after and appreciated.

Thanks,

What is the purpose of this move? Do you have newer hardware, or is
there a problem on the old system?

I recently did a server upgrade and it sounds like your situation
might be similar, but I'd hesitate to say too much without a better
understanding of what you are trying to do.

New Equipment.

Project Server 2003 and WSS on one server. Views Notification service on
another server. Tables on a SQL Server 2000.

We would really like to avoid "Installing" again if possible.

Thanks

Thanks,

Mark,

You can backup and restore project server database and Install Project
Server Connection to new database. I think that will be easiest and
recommended option.

The DataBase is not our concern. It's ProjectServer2003 and WSS, we would
like to avoid doing another install, if possible.

Hi Mark,
You are going to have to do a fresh install I'm afraid, as you are moving
the application server to new hardware. The good news is that this is at
least a low risk option, as you don't have to trash the old system at all,
just have a cut over date to the new app server.

I know this isn't what you wanted to hear, but this should be less than 2
days effort, maybe even one (and thats with all SPS and hotfixes etc). More
effort will be required to update the Pro Clients and educate the users for
PWA access, but then maybe you can redirect the old URL to the new one.

Thanks, Ben

I was fairly sure that would be the answer. I was just hoping someone had
some tricks I didn't know about.

Thanks again. I'm off to do an install!

FWIW: in my experience, re-deployment to the clients was a
painpoint...might want to pay attn to your strategy on this one.

Also, if you find a way to redirect WSS sites, I'd be particularly
interested,

All the best,
Elaine

Hi! Mark,

If your only concern is the name of the new server, why not create an alias
in DNS using the old name, pointing to the new server?
