Proliferation of Styles in MS Word 2001

I start with defining few styles before typing my document, e. g. body
text, few headings with first group numbered with Latin numerals, then
capital letters then Arabic numerals and so forth. After progressing
with typing, the six or seven styles I start with multiply on their
own. I suspect that this would burden available resources and could
create problems later. I tried to delete those unwanted style, but new
ones keep coming up. How can the automatic proliferation of styles be
avoided?

Word doesn't create styles on its own--it just looks that way. To solve the
problem, do Tools > Options > Edit. Un-tick "Keep track of formatting".
