Prompt user when missing font in Word 2003

J

Jim (RBS)

Is there a setting to prompt user when a font is missing? Word would prompt
me before when a font was missing in a file from an outside source.

I am in graphics design and normally use other programs, but receive more
Word files now, and some appear incorrect due to the font displayed on my
computer rather than the font used by the original computer.

Word used to prompt me when a font was missing. (Microsoft Office 2003)

Thanks!

I don't think Word has ever issued any notice of a missing font. Publisher
does this, however.

Hi Jim,

Word shows the name of the font that the document creator called out for a portion of the text. If in Word 2003 you try to format
text in a document with a non-existant font while editing (select text and type in a madeup font name in the font list on the
toolbar) Word 2003 will tell you that the font doesn't exist and asks if you want to specify it in formatting anyway. Once you say
yes it doesn't ask again if you want to use that name, not even if you say embed fonts in Tools=>Options=>Save and the font still
doesn't exist :(.
Word 2007 appears to no longer prompt for that.

If the font is not present then Windows font substitution rules come into play. You can use

Tools=>Options=>Compatibility=>Font Substitution

with the document open to see if any fonts are being substituted and to change the substitution choices.

It has been requested that there be some sort of visual cue or setting that would advise you of this without needing to remember to
always go check (or have a macro do it for you), but... :)
