Prompting username when opening Word Document from Portal Server 2003

On a Portal Server 2003 site that has anonymous access enabled (and
working) when selecting a word document in a document library it (word
2003 or 2007) prompts for a user account. If cancel is selected the
document is displayed. All the information about anonymous access and
documents seems to be related to MOSS (Sharepoint 2007).

What is causing the prompting from Word when opening a document and
how can it
be resolved?
