Pronunciation marks?

Eagle Rock

Hi all,

Is there some way I can add pronunciation marks to letters in Word? For
example -- the "long i" sound, as in "Hide" would be an i with a bar above
it. How do I make that combined symbol?

Thanks,
Dan

Not that I know of unless you want to use an International Phonetic
Alphabet font. You might get somewhere with the equation editor but,
IMHO, you really need a system that others understand. There is the
SAMPA system which is useful for vowels:

However, this system is not as well known as it might be.

Sorry, replying to my own reply :)

You might get some satisfactory symbols by Insert Symbol...Unicode
(hex) but they would not be much good unless you could get others to
use them too.

Google for "phonetic font". There are enough hits to satisfy even the most
avaricious fontfreque.

Dan, when in word select Insert then symbol then in the dialogue box that
comes up choose a font, normal text is fine, find the character you want and
press insert and close the box. If you need to reformat it to a specific
typeface highlight it and choose the correct typeface and pitch.
Now if you want this to always appear this way when you type the word i.e..
(híde) then select the word and copy it. Then select tools and then
autocorrect, paste the copied word into the "with" field and then type the
word as you would normally type it in the replace field. I have done this
with the word "resume" which then is replaced with résumé. Hope this
helps
