Proper way to select an object in the document to get its name

I am familar with recording macros in excel very well, but not so much in
word. I have a thesis and one of the comments I got from my reviews was that
it is confusing to have my cross references show up as Figure n -
"Description of figure", which is a requirement to name the figure that way
in the caption. I know that in word for a cross reference I can just choose
to show on the label and number. Knowin I have over 400 cross-refernces i
thought I would just record macros, select a cross refernce with the mouse,
change it from display label and description, to just label, stop the macro,
and then write a simple For Each Loop.

However, to my disapointment you cannot select stuff with the mouse to get
the object name like in excel. I tried doing it by using the keyboard while
holding down the shift key, but I just got an active selection range
generated by producing the keystokes and no object name for a
cross-reference. What is the best way in word to figure out something like
this.
