Protect selected cells without protecting worksheet

I am working on a spreadsheet that I only want to protect certain cells from
being altered. When I try to used the directions from Microsoft Office
Online Help, it appears I must protect the entire worksheet which defeats the
purpose of protecting just certain cells. Another individual will input
hours per day, however I don't want this person to be able to change the
hourly rate of pay. Any suggestions?
