Protected Baselining on PS

Salil

This is regarding that different behavior of the MPP files (1. Published
Project Server MPP 2.Local copy(MPP) of the same Project Plan )
The configuration we have on PS is (PM is not enabled for taking Protected
baselines(0-5))

Our observations are ..

PM is flashed error message when taking Protected baseline while directly
working on the published copy of Project plan(which is correct) but no error
is flashed while taking the protected baseline while working on the local
copy of the project plan. This way PM can overwrite the published version of
same project plan with the updated copy of the plan on PS

Is there any way by which we can control our users from overwriting the
published project plans with the local copies or force the same profile
settings while working with local copies of the Project Plan..

Well, it appears your PMs have learned how to "cheat" the Project Server
system regarding rebaselining projects. Project Server enterprise settings
govern only enterprise projects, but have no affect whatsoever on local MPP
files, and there is no way to force Project Server to control MPP files.
Therefore, the only way to address your situation is by making this a
training and performance issue. Hope this helps.

Thanks Dale..

OK, I understand there is no out of the box feature to control this. How
about customizations to control this behavior...

Just between you and me (and the thousands of people who read this
newsgroup). I think your problem is one of people and process. But if you
can't solve the problem that way, I would suggest you repost your question
in the microsoft.public.project.developer newsgroup and allow our developers
to give their opinion about customization. Hope this helps.

Salil:

Your folks *are* using the system in a way it was not intended. They should
never be replacing published plans with local versions. You can solve this
problem with some custom coding, either through an event handler or a macro
that does some integrity checking on the project plan. I suspect a macro is
the probably the way to go.
