Protected Cells in OfficeX2004 but not Windows Office

I'm having trouble accessing cells in a spreadsheet created in Windows
Excel. There are a number of cells that should be protected and are,
but I also don't have access to over half the cells I should have
access to. These cells are not protected when the document is opened
on a Windows based machine. Any ideas?

Most likely the file has Protect & Share feature invoked which isn't
supported in Mac XL. As a result the entire sheet is interpreted as being
protected. If the protection is password protected & you can't get the
originator to send you an unprotected copy you might want to have a look
here (as long as you aren't being dishonest):

Thanks, that at least will help in the short term. Any idea if the
issue will be addressed in the new version coming January?
