Protected documents and Graphics

Gerald Neal

Word 97. I have a Form protected template with some
unprotected sections. When I add a clip-art or graphic to
the unprotected sections I can't resize or highlight the
graphic to get at the properties (for repositioning,
background, wrapping, etc.) I can take off the protection
and manipulate the graphic but that defeats the purpose of
the protection on the template.

How can I access the graphics properties in the
unprotected part of the document while retaining the
protection on the rest of the document?

Hi Cherry,

Thanks for the advise but unless I've missed something I
don't think it answers my question.

I've added graphics to an unprotected section of a
protected document (created from a sectionalised and
protected template) but I can't access the graphics
properties in order to move, resize or vary its
properties. This is despite the fact that the graphic has
been added to the unprotected section of the form.

The solutions you refered to deal with updating Fields not
graphics and deal with protected sections of the form not
unprotected sections.

Sorry if I'm a bit obtuse on the answer you gave but I
don't see how it solves the problem as stated.

Cheers,
Gerald

Hi Gerald ,

Thank you for the posting again. We have performed further research and
testing on our side and we have reproduced the symptom you described.

When a document is protected, it results in reduced functionality to limit
the accessibility of the document. That is why we cannot select the picture
and go to the Properties box of this picture.

The user needs to unprotect the document in order to edit the pictures. You
can enable the Forms toolbar and press the Protect Forms button ( lock
button ) to switch between protect and unprotect. It can facilitate the
usage.

As we understand the Form Protection is document wide. It is not recommeded
to specify some sections protected while the others unprotected. Actually,
other parts of the document, such as body text and inserted objects are
in-editable.

Hope the above information and explanation answers your question and
clarifies your concern. If anything is unclear, please let me know.

We have reported your requirement to our developer team and product team.
They will take this into consideration and work together closely on such a
feature. If you have any suggestions or feedback on our products, please
submit them on the following website:

Hi Cherry,

Thanks for reproducing the error in you research lab. But
I think your advise not to use a protected template with
unprotected sections is far from the mark. Word 97 is
supposed to be built to allow for protected and
unprotected sections of a template. The whole purpose of
which is to maintain the integrity of the template while
allowing others to create documents from that template
that give them the freedom to input their information
while ensuring that the protected structure of the
template remains unchanged. That is the purpose of Forms
in Word 97.

If the product does not properly cater for those items
added into the unprotected part of the template (i.e.
allow access to graphics properties in the unprotected
section), then that means the product is not working as it
should. I can accept that this is a bug, no product can
be perfect, all I ask is that you acknowledge it as a bug
and don't put the emphasis back on me inferring that I'm
using the product improperly, because I'm not. My
reference is "Using Micorsoft Word 97" published by QUE
copyright 1997, ISBN: 0-7897-1398-5, Section
called "Protecting Your Form from Unauthorized Change",
page 690 "Moreover, you can lock specific sections of a
document and leave others unlocked. This techique works
well when you want to use form fields in part of your
document, but leave the remainder open for editing."

Which is exactly what I want to do, but obviously you
can't insert graphics and edit them in the unprotected
part of the Form because there is a bug that prevents this
functionality.

Please let me know if this bug has been fixed in either
Office 2000 or Office XP editions please.

Regards,
Gerald Neal

Hi, I have been using the knowledge base to try to understand how to protect certain sections of a document I want to send electronically. From what I've gathered you save as a template then go to protect document, then choose forms and here I should be able to select sections and go from there, however it is grayed out. I have run into the same issue from my workstation at work using ME. Can you help me get this resolved? Thanks for any assistance on this matter
