Protecting a table in a word document

I need to protect a table (with word 97) that is located in an unprotected
section.
Is there a way to do so, other than creating that table as a protected excel
object, or creating a new section containing this table only?

In Word 97 (also Word 2000 and Word 2002) there is no other way. There
is a way in Word 2003 and 2007, but it isn't backward compatible with
earlier versions.
