Protecting Certain Tasks

Hi All,

Is there a method of protecting entire rows in the Gantt
entry view? I wary that certain users of the plan may
accidentally change something and I'd like to lock down
the tasks.

I cannot find a method of doing this and would appreciate
any guidance the group can offer.

TIA - Hardip

Hi Hardip,

If users can open the Project file with write access they can change any and
all information. I suggest either protecting the file with a write
reservation password or converting selected views to either a PDF or HTML
file and sending to your users.

Hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Thanks for the quick response Julie.

I will have to password protect the spreadsheet!

Thanks again,
Hardip

'Fraid not - access to the entire plan file is an all or nothing deal unless
you use Project Server and PWA where you can control access privileges.
When you say "users" I assume you mean the resources working on the project.
IMHO, you shouldn't be allowing anyone except the project manager and his
/her staff write access to the plan anyway. Nothing should ever get entered
without first being reviewed and approved by the project manager and
depending on the impact of the proposed change, perhaps more senior
management as well. Because Project is deceptively easy to use but often
subtle in the implications of many entries, allowing people to edit the plan
who are not grounded in the principles and disciplines of formal project
management is an invitation to project failure and disaster.
