Protecting sub docs within a master

Bodye

Hi all,

I have about 70 word documents that I want to link together as sub documents
under a master doc. I want to do this so that I can search for specific
words within these 70 docs.

However, I want to make sure that these documents can't be accidentally
altered while they are all linked under the master. Is there a way to protect
them from alteration?

I can't PDF all the docs into one because the 70 docs are reguarly changing
and the PDF would quickly be out of date.

Thanks,
Bodye

I like the concept of Master and sub-documents. What is your suggestion for
an alternative? I am in the process of composing an departmental manual. I
would like to be able to print the manual in its entirety but all so want to
be able to keep/print single headings on the regular basis.

There is nothing wrong with the concept - its the execution that's at fault.
If you are going to use it ensure that you have separate backups of the
component files, as the chances are that you will need them.

If you wish to play safe combine them into a single document for printing.
Provided that are all created from the same template that should not be an
issue. You could try the boiler.dot add-in that you can download from my web
site for the purpose of combining them.

You may find http://www.gmayor.com/save_numbered_versions.htm useful also.
