Protection Causes Fields to disappear

I am a very experience user of Word and after over a year
of form development I have encountered a problem having
upgraded to XP.

on a 14 page form with the full variety of form fields,
when I protect a document all drop-down boxes etc. (with
the exception of Text fields) become hidden.

Unprotecting the document again does not cause them to
reappear.

Testing the existance of the fields with Tools, Options,
Show, Form fields proves that they are there but ghostly!

Please can anyone help, or resolve?

number?
